COUNCIL MINUTES – March 16, 2020

The Town Council of the Town of Steele, Alabama, met in Regular Session at 6:30 PM on Monday, March 16, 2020 at Steele Community Center. The following members were present:

Present: Roger Adams, Mayor
Richard Reynolds, Councilmember Michael Stevens, Councilmember Philip Gleason Jr., Councilmember Nancy Miller-Borg, Councilmember

Absent: Rick Barnes, Councilmember

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Adams, who then asked Councilmember Gleason, Jr. to lead everyone in a word of prayer.

The Town Council having read the minutes from the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, March 2, 2020, motion was made by Councilmember Miller-Borg to approve the minutes, seconded by Councilmember Gleason Jr. and approved by the Town Council.

Ayes: Gleason Jr., Stevens, Miller-Borg and Reynolds Nays: None.

Mayor Adams brought up that the Financials from February would be available after the current Town Clerk, Jessica Martin returned from maternity leave.

Mayor Adams read an Ordinance to annex the Deweese property into the city limits. He stated that this will be voted on at the next Council Meeting.

Chief Martin gave an update on Coronavirus, stating that the people most affected by it would be 50 years or older, and people with underlying health conditions. In children under the age of 9 years old, less than 1% show symptoms. He recommended that we follow the guidelines of staying 6 feet away from everyone and be mindful of symptoms, etc.
Councilmember Miller-Borg asked about availability of protective gear. Chief Martin stated that they have enough protective gear available to use. He stated that the Fire Department has guidelines from the State that they will follow. Councilmember MillerĀ­ Borg asked if they got any information on COVID-19 from Central Dispatch when going on a call. Chief Martin stated that not currently, but that was likely to change. Chief Martin said that the Fire Department truck is at Right Price garage. It needs injectors and o-rings, and the work will be completed this week.

Councilmember Gleason, Jr. brought up the 4th of July event. He stated that they had the food, and the band lined up. And when the current Town Clerk returns from maternity leave, he will contact the water rides, and start working on the car show.

Councilmember Stevens mentioned that in the past, Steele had a farmers market. Councilmember Miller-Borg stated that former Councilmember Dunn had tried to make
the farmer’s market successful but there was not enough interest to make it worthwhile.

Mayor Adams asked if anyone else in attendance had any business to bring before the Council.

Steele Citizen and Firefighter Jason Green brought up that speeding continues to be an issue on Lakeview Street. He stated that people continue to break the 25 MPH speed limit on that street. Councilmember Stevens suggested we utilize previously used speed humps. They are 8 ft. wide and would allow room on either side for a bicycle to pass. Firefighter Green also stated that with regard to the Coronavirus, washing hands with soap and warm water is the first defense in preventing the virus.

Mayor Adams said that the next Council Meeting will be on Monday, April 6, 2020, at 6:30 p.m.

With there being no further business to come before this Regular Council Meeting of March 16, 2020, Councilmember Miller-Borg made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded Councilmember Reynolds, and adjourned at 6:57 P.M.
