Council Minutes – November 16, 2020

The Town Council of the Town of Steele, Alabama, met in Regular Session at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2020, at the Steele Community Center. Upon roll call the following members were present.

Present: Roger Adams, Mayor
Richard Reynolds, Councilmember Philip Gleason Jr., Councilmember Tammy Deweese, Councilmember Michael Stevens, Councilmember

Absent: Rick Barnes, Councilmember

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Roger Adams who then asked Councilmember Reynolds to lead everyone in a word of prayer.

The minutes from the November 5, 2020 meeting were approved by a motion from Councilmember Reynolds, seconded by Councilmember Gleason Jr., and approved by the Council.
Ayes: Gleason Jr., Stevens, Deweese and Reynolds Nays: none

Mayor Adams brought up the one-time employee raise for this year. He proposed $750 one-time raise for full time and regular part time employees, $350 for part-time employees, and $200 pro­ rated amount for the Senior Driver for a total of $8,400.00. A motion was made by Councilmember Gleason Jr. to approve the one-time employee raises, seconded by Councilmember Reynolds and approved by the Council.

Mayor Adams read Resolution 2020 – 029, a Resolution honoring the retirement of Esther Dunn. Mrs. Dunn is retiring from the Steele Post Office after working there for 37 years.
Councilmember Dewees e made a motion to approve Resolution 2020 – 029, seconded by Councilmember Stevens and approved by the Council.

Ayes: Gleason Jr., Stevens, Deweese and Reynolds Nays: none

Police Chief Ward stated that I-Canine called and advised that we should be taking possession of the police dog in the next couple of weeks.

Mayor Adams stated that we have received a quote for $1,350.00 from Business Systems &
Consultants, Inc. for scanning all of the Town’s minutes, Resolutions and Ordinances into a searchable database. Mayor Adams stated that he has some questions regarding the quote and

Councilmember Reynolds stated that, as mentioned in a previous Council Meeting, he would like the Council to discuss increasing the rental rates for the Community Center and the Nutrition Center with the new rates starting in January 2021. After discussion among the Council, Councilmember Reynolds made a motion to increase the Community Center rental to $300 ($175 rent & $125 deposit) and the Nutrition Center rental to $225 ($150 rent & $75 deposit), seconded by Councilmember Deweese and approved by the Council.

Mayor Adams mentioned that we had just sent another email to Advanced Disposal regarding getting some garbage cans. Several customers need cans and we haven’t been able to get any from Advanced Disposal. Councilmember Stevens stated that he would call Advanced Disposal regarding this issue.

Councilmember Deweese stated that Santa is scheduled to come on December 17, from 6 – 7 pm. She stated that several ladies from the Flow Church have said they will help out with the cookies, etc. Councilmember Deweese also stated that due to Covid, the activities may have to be adapted, and they will adjust as necessary. It was also mentioned that since Unipres is not helping the school this year with Christmas presents for the children, it might be a good idea to do an Angel Tree to help out with the gifts. Chief Ward stated that he had spoken with Chief Martin and the Fire Department will do a road block to help buy Christmas gifts for the Steele School Residents.

Tracie Welch was present at the Council Meeting and requested an update on the sewer project on Herb Collette Drive. Mayor Adams stated that he had communicated with the Engineer and the Contractor and has not received a response back. He stated that he will contact them and that he may have to go with another Contractor.

With there being no further business to come before this Regular council Meeting of November 16, 2020, Councilmember Reynolds made a motion to adjourn the meeting, which was seconded by Councilmember Stevens and adjourned at 7:43 PM.
